Chuwi DX1

Rotating cameras on smartphones are a fairly novel feature, but on tablets? That’s exactly what Chinese manufacturer Chuwi did with the DX1. The Chuwi DX1 is a fairly decent although unremarkable tablet if you ignore the innovative camera. You’re getting a 6.98 inch HD display, 2GHz MediaTek MT8392 octa-core processor, 1GB RAM and 16GB of storage.

Of course, with the rotating camera, the Chuwi DX1 suddenly becomes a conversation starter. After all, a tablet draws much more attention than a smartphone, and when you start rotating the camera, you’ll be able to get some interesting angles for your shots.

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the Chuwi DX1 in the local market since they don’t have a presence here, save for a few Divisoria importers, I suppose. If you want to get your hands on one, you’ll have to order through an international online store for 799 Yuan or about Php5.8k plus taxes.

Chuwi DX1 Specs

  • 6.98″ HD IPS display (720 x 1280 resolution, 210ppi)
  • 2GHz MediaTek MT8392 octa-core processor
  • Mali 450 MP4 GPU
  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB ROM, expandable via micro SD
  • 13mp autofocus rotating camera with LED flash
  • 3G support, bands undisclosed
  • WiFi b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • GPS with A-GPS
  • Price: 799 Yuan (about Php5.8k after straight conversion)

Cherry Mobile Excalibur Revealed with Octa-Core CPU and 5 Inch HD Screen! [Updated with More Pics!]

Cherry Mobile Excalibur

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos One was a great octa-core phone at a great value. Unfortunately, the local brand only released it to the public for one day as part of their 5th year anniversary celebration. Since then, it’s been nowhere to be seen except for the sporadic review here and there. Well, if you’ve been looking for an alternative, then the Cherry Mobile Excalibur (revealed thanks to Cherry Angel) just might scratch your itch.

Specs-wise, the Cherry Mobile Excalibur is almost identical to the Cosmos One. The Excalibur’s IPS screen is smaller at 5 inches versus the Cosmos One’s 5.5 inch screen. However, the 1.4GHz MT6589M octa-core SoC, 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM is the same as the anniversary phone’s. Also, thanks to the chipset, HSPA+, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS are supported right out of the box.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

The specs are decent but rather ho-hum on paper. However, there are a few notable features such as the Dragontrail scartch- and shatter-resistant glass, as well as the 13mp camera with its Sony IMX179 BSI sensor. On the downside, you only get a 1,920mAh battery, which is non-removable at that. Still, at Php6,999, the Cherry Mobile Excalibur is a solid value. You’ll just have to decide if you can live with the average battery capacity.

Cherry Mobile Premium Glass-Metal Smartphone With Sony Camera Teased on Facebook!

Cherry Mobile Glass-Metal Smartphone

Just as Cherry Angel leaked an upcoming model, Cherry Mobile is now teasing another one as well. No name has been revealed yet, but this Cherry Mobile premium glass-metal smartphone is shaping up to be a premium looker. You’re getting Corning Gorilla Glass on both sides of the device, not to mention a metallic build that uses magnesium alloy in certain spots. To top it all off, you’re also getting a camera sensor that’s made by Sony!

Beyond that, there isn’t any more information on this new smartphone. Hopefully, Cherry Mobile picks up the pace and rolls out the teasers pretty quickly. For now, the specs are a mystery, as is the price. This one looks worth waiting for though :)

My Top 5 Android Utility Apps

Top 5 Android Utility Apps

What’s better than to install utility apps on our Android smartphones to improve their functionality? Without utility apps, it can be pretty hard to manage files, minimize RAM usage, surf the internet faster, or even automate simple tasks such as adjusting the screen brightness at a preset time to save battery. With utility apps, you can gain more control over your phone. So without any further ado, let me share my list of the Top 5 Utility Apps that I always make sure to install every time I start using a new phone.

5. ES File Explorer

Though smartphones always come with a stock file manager, I usually replace them with ES File Explorer for a number of reasons:
ES File Explorer - Easy Navigation

  •  Easier navigation. Just swipe to left/right to change directories or panes. You can set the number of panes that are automatically opened once you use the app. It can also change views to set it either List or Icon and sort the items via Name, Modified Date, and Size.

ES FIle Explorer - LAN support image 2 ES FIle Explorer - LAN support image 1 ES FIle Explorer - LAN support image 3 ES FIle Explorer - LAN support image 4 ES FIle Explorer - Remote Manager
  • Wirelessly manage your computer’s files. ES File Explorer has wireless LAN support to manage your computer’s files using your smartphone. You can wirelessly connect your phone to your PC and transfer files between the two. This saves you the effort of connecting your phone to your PC through a USB cable just to archive your vacation pictures and other files. Of course, this is assuming that your PC and phone are connected to the same WiFi network. If you don’t have an available WiFi network, you can use another neat feature called Remote Manager. Just enable it on your phone and it will give you an FTP address to enter on your PC. After that, you can start transferring files to and from your PC.

ES FIle Explorer - Cloud Support

  • Support for cloud storage such as Google drive, DropBox, OneDrive, Box, Amazon Cloud, SugarSync, Yandex and Bitcasa. If you use any of these cloud storage options, this feature will really come in handy.
  • Its latest version now supports 7z Compression, in addition to ZIP format.

ES FIle Explorer - App Analyzer image 1 ES FIle Explorer - App Analyzer image 2
  • Other neat features such as App Manager, SD Card Analyst and Root Explorer for rooted phones.

4. Opera Mini Browser

Screenshot_2014-10-05-12-51-20 (349x620)

Let’s admit it — not everyone has a high speed mobile connection, especially in our country where we are ranked as having the slowest (and most expensive) internet speeds in the region. When you just want to browse the news, visit your favorite blogs, or browse Facebook, Opera Mini comes in very handy. Created by a Norwegian company, Opera Software ASA, this app is touted as the world’s fastest mobile browser. Although it lacks features such as incognito and flash support for video (which can be found in other full-packed Opera browsers), Opera Mini is my go-to browser whenever I have a need for speed.

3. Greenify

Greenify image 1 Greenify image 3 Screenshot_2014-10-05-13-11-55 (349x620)

If your phone no longer feels as fast as when you first bought it, you might want to try this app. Greenify can hibernate other apps installed on your phone. You want to hibernate an app for one reason – preventing it from running in the background to save precious RAM and CPU clock cycles, which theoretically results in faster performance.

You might think this is similar to numerous task killers in Play Store, but it isn’t. Task killers basically just kill apps for a moment, but can be invoked later by itself or other apps even if you don’t tap on it, and then run wild in the background again. Greenify, on the other hand, will totally keep it from running in background until you explicitly use it.

I usually freeze apps that don’t need to be running in the background, such as games, tools, browsers, picture-editing and note-taking apps. But there are apps that need to run in the background such as launchers, Go SMS, Handcent, Mr. Number, and Tasker, so be sure not to include them in a list of apps to be frozen. Install Greenify, then compare RAM usage found in Settings > Apps > Running Apps to see it for yourself.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

2. Titanium Backup (root needed)

Titanium Backup - backup image 1 Titanium Backup - backup image 2 Titanium Backup - backup image 3

One app that your phone can’t live without is a backup tool. With Titanium Backup, changing phones doesn’t have to be an ordeal since your apps can seamlessly transfer to your new phone. What makes Titanium Backup outstanding from other backup tools is that when it backs up an app, not only will it back-up the app itself, but the data that the app is using as well. This is useful for offline games where you want to save your progress to avoid going back to square one, as well as apps where you have made several changes to its settings that you don’t want to do over again.

Titanium Backup - uninstall system app image 1 Titanium Backup - uninstall system app image 2 Titanium Backup - uninstall system app image 3 Titanium Backup - uninstall system app image 4

Another very useful feature of Titanium Backup that you’ll love is that it can uninstall system apps. Yes, you read it right — it can uninstall system apps. Notice that when you first bought your phone, you will see a lot of bloatware, force-installed by the phone’s manufacturer, often deemed useless by most people because it takes up precious resources. Now you can get rid of them using this app. First, convert the system app you want to remove into a user app, next is to uninstall it once the process is finished. This is why I always root my phone — just to install Titanium Backup so that I can do away with bloatware.

1. Tasker

Screenshot_2014-10-05-13-15-48 (349x620)

Last but not least, potentially the most powerful app that can be installed on Android — Tasker. It can practically automate everything on your phone like automatically turning the GPS on when opening navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze, lowering the notifications volume when you’re at the office, or automatically replying to a text message when you set yourself as busy during specific times of the day.

You can also set Tasker to say the name of the person who just texted you aloud so you can immediately decide if you want to reply or ignore it if you are too busy doing something else. You can level this up by asking Tasker to read the message to you if an earphone is plugged in.

The list is practically endless. But let me say this, the learning curve of using Tasker is steep and it requires a programmer’s mindset to automate things smoothly. No, you do not have to be a programmer to use Tasker effectively, but you do have to have a similar mindset.

If you can read and follow instructions, are willing to do some search, and don’t get easily frustrated when things don’t work as you expected, automating everything you want using Tasker should soon become second-nature. Once you get the hang of it, you will find yourself automating any repetitive task on your phone such as sending a text message to let your loved ones know that you’re already at the office every morning.

There is so much this app can do and it will require a series of articles to cover the basics and its advanced uses. Perhaps I can go into that some time in the future :)

So there you have it guys. If you have a favorite utility app you think is worth mentioning here, feel free to comment below.

Starmobile Up+

If you’re like me and think that 8GB should be the new norm when it comes to entry level smartphones, Starmobile has got a new treat for you. The Starmobile Up that originally came with 4GB of internal storage got upgraded to 8GB and now goes by the name Starmobile Up+. It also now sports a slightly higher price tag at Php5,490.

The rest of the specs remain unchanged. It’s the same 5 inch FWVGA IPS display, 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582M processor, and 1GB RAM packed inside the same body. You also get an 8mp BSI rear camera with LED flash and 2mp BSI front camera, not to mention KitKat 4.4 out of the box.

Cherry Mobile Superion Frontier Is an Octa Core Tablet with 7 Inch IPS Screen!

Cherry Mobile Superion Frontier

In typical Cherry Mobile fashion, the pioneering local brand released a brand new brochure for the Christmas season that revealed a slew of new products. Lost in this maelstrom of new budget-friendly tech was the Cherry Mobile Superion Frontier, a 7 inch tablet that just so happened to pack an octa-core CPU, an IPS disay, and a whopping 16GB of storage?

On top of that, this is coming from Cherry Mobile’s Superion series of tablets, so you know that this thing comes with call and text capability, not to mention support for mobile data, meaning you can browse the internet on the Superion Frontier without having to be tethered to a WiFi hotspot?

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

So how much does this baby cost? How does a cool Php8,999 sound? Of course, it does seem to have a downside. It only packs a 3,300mAh battery, which is on the low side for a 7 inch tablet, especially when you consider this is an octa-core tablet we’re talking about. Still, the Php9k price tag is looking pretty attractive, particularly since the closest competing alternative retails for Php3k more while packing the exact same specs.

Cherry Mobile Superion Frontier Specs

  • 7″ IPS display (resolution yet to be disclosed)
  • 1.7GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor
  • Mali 450 MP4 GPU
  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage

  • 3.75G/HSPA+
  • WiFi b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • GPS with A-GPS

Gionee GPad G5

After the Elife E7, Elife S5.5, and Elife E7 Mini, Gionee is slowly starting to bring in their lower end models from their current lineup. Their most recent entry is the Gionee GPad G5, a monster of a phablet at 5.5 inches that just so happens to be one of the few locally available smartphones powered by the 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6591 hexa-core processor. In terms of performance, the MT6591 sits somewhere MediaTek’s higher end octa-core MT6592 and the entry-level quad core MT6582.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

In addition to the nifty processor and gargantuan IPS display, the Gionee GPad G5 will also sport An 8mp rear-facing camera, 2mp front camera, and some pretty awesome Yamaha speakers. Of course, you’ll also get the usual HSPA+, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS support. The GPad G5 will launch in the Philippines with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, however, the 2,400mAh battery is a bit of a disappointment considering the screen size. Still, if you’re looking for a very capable multimedia machine that can do double-duty as a PSP replacement, the Gionee GPad G5 is a pretty good option.

Gionee GPad G5 Specs

  • 5.5@ HD IPS display (720 x 1280 resolution)

Gionee CTRL V4S to Launch Locally with Quad Core CPU and 4.5 Inch Screen

Gionee CTRL V4S

Some of you may remember the Gionee Pioneer P4 that was launched locally a few months back. The specs were relatively decent, but the aestetics could have used some work. Thankfully, the Pioneer P4 has a spiritual successor of sorts in the form of the Gionee CTRL V4S, a smartphone that rocks nearly the same specs but looks miles better than the earlier launched P4.

The Gionee CTRL V4S sports a 4.5 inch capacitive LCD display with a resolution of 480 x 854 (FWVGA). As for the brains behind this beauty, the CTRL V4S is driven by a 1.3GHz quad core MediaTek MT6582 processor, coupled with 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The 8mp rear-facing camera is probably the only upgraded spec on the V4S when compared to the Pioneer P4’s 5mp rear shooter. However, the rest of the specs are virtually the same.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

The Gionee CTRL V4S retails for Php6,999, which is exactly the same SRP of the Pioneer P4 when it first reached our shores. Are the minor upgrades and prettier aesthetics worth keeping the retail price at Php6,999? Please be the judge and let me know in the comments :)

Gionee CTRL V4S Specs

  • 4.5@ FWVGA capacitive LCD display (480 x 854 resolution)
  • 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582 quad core processor
  • Mali 400 MP2 GPU
  • Android 4.4 KitKat

Qube X-Cam Sports Camera is a Budget Action Cam for Just Php3,990!

Qube X-Cam Sports Camera Front and Back

Action cameras are all the rage these days because they’re small, portable, and can be used to catch shots or video of any subject or situation given the right accessory. The only downside is they can be pretty expensive. Well, the Qube X-Cam Sports Camera looks to change that, bringing relatively decent imaging specs at a surprisingly affordable price point of just Php3,990!

The Qube X-Cam Sports Camera records videos at 1080p Full HD and takes 12mp stills. However, the images are actually just interpolated up from 2mp, so you won’t end up with the most detailed photos if you decide to blow them up. The sensor is an Omnivision OV2710 though, which is popular among surveillance camera manufacturers. You benefit from great low light sensitivity (if the brochure is to be believed) and a 170 degree field of view.

Qube X-Cam Sports Camera Accessories

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

The camera itself is just half the story though. It’s often the accessories that make or break an action camera, and the Qube X-Cam Sports Camera is set to offer a decent selection of them. There’s a basic Quick Clip for easy attachment in most situations. There’s also a Handle Bar Mount and Helmet Side Mount for those cool POV extreme videos you see on YouTube. Finally, there’s the Waterproof Housing for when you want to record video on your next snorkeling adventure.

At Php3,990 for the basic package that includes an 8GB SD card, the Qube X-Cam Sports Camera is a pretty awesome value. Having just come from a vehicular accident, I’ve been itching to get a GoPro, but this just might make the perfect alternative. I’m not sure if the package already includes the accessories, but I’m crossing my fingers that it does. Looking to get one for yourself? The X-Cam Sports Camera is now available at Qube’s website.

Cherry Mobile Superion Vector

Cherry Mobile has been an absolute master at hyping there Android smartphones and tablets in the last few years. However, every now and then something that’s actually worth the hype seems to fly under the radar. One such tablet that didn’t get a lot of hype was the Cherry Mobile Superion Vector.

Cherry Mobile Superion Vector Screen

Maybe it’s because the Superion Vector was lumped in among a bunch of other product announcements from Cherry Mobile. Admittedly, those things can get tiring after a while. But I was surprised to be honest because the Superion Vector is an absolute steal for its price!

Say what you will about Gionee’s phones, but those things are gorgeous. So it’s about time that a prominent brand such as Gionee settled into the Philippines by getting itself a proper concept store! No, they went and opened one at SM Megamall, and look who graced the store with her presence! Ellen Adarna!

Now, of course, Ellen is Gionee Philippines’ brand ambassadress, so it makes sense that she would go to the Gionee concept store. But a day after the opening? And so dressed down? I must say, it’s a little refreshing to see her grace one of these things. It looks like a number of fans, not to mention a few Gionee sales attendants, managed to get their pic taken with the goddess!

Tronsmart Draco AW80

So there are octa-core smartphones and there are octa-core tablets,  but how come there aren’t any octa-core Android media players and TV boxes?  Tronsmart,  a lesser known electronics brand,  plans to remedy that with the Transmort Draco AW80, an Android TV Box powered by the Allwinner A80 octa-core processor.

Interestingly though,  it isn’t just the octa-core SoC that makes the Tronsmart Draco AW80 Android TV Box unique.  It happens to come in two variants,  one of which is equipped with 4GB RAM!  The 4GB RAM model also comes with a whopping 32GB of storage,  so if you’re looking for a capable media player with console quality graphics,  this one is for you.

The more affordable variant isn’t so shabby either.  It comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage, which isn’t that much of a downgrade anyway.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

At the moment,  both variants of the Tronsmart octa-core Android TV Box can only be bought through Geekbuying.  The 2GB/16GB model is already available for $149 while the more capable and expensive 4GB/32GB variant is on pre-sale for $199 (SRP $249.19). Itching to get one? Keep in mind you’ll be paying for import duties and taxes as well to get either one into the Philippines.

Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph Running NBA 2K14

Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph

The Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph is an awesomely portable Windows machine that allows you to run all of your productivity software (read: Microsoft Office) on a device you can quickly stash in a messenger bag or backpack. It even abandons the bulky power brick that traditional notebook owners have come to loath. However, I’m sure a lot of you have wondered how it fares as a gaming machine.

Well there I was, review unit in front of me and I had just enough space to install NBA 2K14. Naturally, I was curious. NBA 2K14 isn’t exactly one of the most demanding games and if I dialed down the graphics settings, surely it would be playable, right?

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Unfortunately, after running the built-in benchmark utility, I was a bit disappointed. The benchmark never hit more than 20fps at any given moment. Actually, it was more like 10 to 15fps. And when I actually tried playing using a controller, the lag was very noticeable.

Of course, it’s not all gloomy. If you head over to the Windows Store and download games that are better suited for mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. For example, Asphalt 8 played flawlessly with all graphics effects being rendered by the modest chip.

Blackview is a new smartphone series from Centrophone Electronic Corporation, a company that started in the Philippines in 2012. There are dual-, quad- and octa-cores, with prices ranging from Php 3,999.00 to Php 11,999.00, so obviously, the brand looks to challenge for a share of the Philippine market. Let’s take a look at some of their best smartphone offerings:

Blackview JK606

jk606 dual core

Though it’s the most affordable among the pack of dual cores, its screen size speaks the opposite. With a 5.0” qHD display, watching videos or playing casual games should be an enjoyable experience. It’s available in White and Dark Blue color options.

  • Android 4.2 OS (Jellybean)
  • MT 6572M Dual-core Processor
  • 512MB Memory
  • 4GB Internal Storage expandable thru SD card up to 32 GB
  • 2.0 MP front camera, 5MP Back Camera with AF and Flash LED
  • Dual SIM/Dual Standby
  • 2200 mAh battery
  • G Sensor/Light Sensor/Proximity Sensor
  • Wireless Connectivity – GPS/AGPS, WIFI, Bluetooth
  • FM Radio
  • Price – Php 3,999.00

Blackview JK900

jk900 quadcore

At a glance, you might mistake this for a Lenovo smartphone. This quad-core 1.3 GHz phone sports a 5 inch HD IPS display, which is commonly found on other midrange international brands. Those who love to take selfies will love its 5mp front camera, while the rear camera is a 13mp shooter with autofocus and LED flash.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Other specs:

  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB Internal Storage expandable thru SD card up to 32 GB
  • Android 4.4 OS (Kitkat)
  • Dual SIM/ Dual Standby
  • 2200 mAh battery
  • G Sensor/Light Sensor/Proximity Sensor
  • Wireless Connectivity – GPS/A-GPS, WIFI, Bluetooth
  • Support OTG USB 2.0
  • FM Radio
  • Price – Php 6,999.00

Blackview Arrow

arrow octa core

One of the few octa-cores of Blackview is the Arrow. This phone can definitely compete with other local octa-cores available in the market for a few reasons – its price and performance. With an SRP of only Php 11,999.00 for a 5″ Full HD screen coupled with 2GB RAM and a MT6592W octa-core chipset, this deal may be hard to resist.

  • 2 GB RAM
  • 16 GB Internal Storage expandable thru SD card up to 64 GB
  • 8.0 MP (front) and 18.0 MP (rear) camera
  • Dual SIM/ Dual Standby
  • 2100 mAh battery
  • Price – Php 11,999.00

Local brands with mid-to-high end specs are slowly flooding the market. Though some of them have already staked their share of the market, it is still nice to know that there are new brands looking to compete.

Xiaomi to Come Out with Mi Power Bank 16,000mAh!

Mi Power Bank 16,000mAh

As if the 10,400mAh power bank didn’t have enough capacity, it seems Xiaomi, the Top 3 smartphone manufacturer in the world, isn’t content. News is swirling that the Chinese phone maker will soon be coming out with an even higher capacity Mi power bank 16,000mAh. With that kind of juice available to you at any given time, that would be enough to let you go a week without ever having to plug into a power outlet.

While a Xiaomi 16,000mAh power bank might seem like overkill, many mid-high end smartphones have battery capacities of 2,000mAh or more. There are even a couple of phones that I know of that have 5,000mAh batteries. And of course, many people have more than one gadget. With as many families these days that have a smartphone and tablet per family member, having something like this on a road trip would be a huge convenience.

The downside would be the unimaginably long charging time though. My 8,000mAh power bank can take around 6 hours to reach full charge at home. So you would have to leave the Mi power bank 16,000mAh plugged in the evening so it would be ready by the time you wake up.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

The Mi 16,000mAh power bank is expected to see a release on November 11 in Xiaomi’s motherland of China. Official pricing is said to be at 129 yuan ($21), but it will first be sold at a special introductory pricing of 99 yuan ($16). So if you missed out on the Mi power bank 10,400, waiting for the 16,000mAh might not be a bad idea.

Meizu MX4 Hands On: A Superphone That Doesn’t Break the Bank

Meizu MX4

Synthetic benchmark scores are hardly the most accurate measure of a smartphone’s real world performance, but when one of them scores more than 50,000 points on Antutu, people are going to take notice. That’s just what the Meizu MX4 did at a mini launch event the other day courtesy of Novo7 Tech where media representatives were able to spend some hands on time with the budget-minded superphone.

Antutu Score

Of course, benchmarks are just one aspect of a smartphone that people look at. What about the display? The Meizu MX4 sports an unusually sized 5.36 inch Full HD IPS display with a weird resolution of 1152 x 1920. It’s still Full HD, although the aspect ratio is a little wider (in portrait orientation) than the typical 1080 x 1920 Full HD screen.

Right Side 2

While the screen is a little wider, the bezels are pretty minimal, allowing you to wrap your hand around the phone quite comfortably. Also, the viewing angle is rather impressive as seen in the picture above.

Homescreen

As for navigation and software, the Meizu MX4 runs Android KitKat 4.4.2 with their custom UI layer called Flyme OS running on top. Navigating through the UI still resembles Android, although Flyme OS has a mind of its own. It’s hard to form any impressions right now. Perhaps we’ll have better luck at Novo7 Tech’s Meizu MX4 event on November 20.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Left Side

As for the build quality, the Meizu MX4 is incredibly lightweight. I’ve had friends who’ve said it feels about as light as an O+ Air.

Top

Unfortunately, that also means it hardly feels premium. Still, I’d rather go with a lightweight phone at this size than one that feels premium but weighs heavily in the hand and pocket.

Model

Hopefully, I’ll be able to get my hands on a review unit like this lady here so I can do a full review of the Meizu MX4. I’ll keep my fingers crossed :)

Meizu MX4 Specs

  • 5.36″ Full HD IPS display (1152 x 1920 resolution, 418ppi)
  • 2.2GHz MediaTek MT6595 octa-core processor (2.2GHz quad core Cortex-A17 + 1.7GHz quad core Cortex-A7)
  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Flyme OS UI layer
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB or 32GB internal storage options
  • 20.7mp rear-facing autofocus camera with Sony-made sensor and two-tone LED flash
  • 2mp front camera
  • 3.75G/HSPA+ connectivity
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS with A-GPS
  • 3,100mAh battery

Lumia 535 is Microsoft’s First Non-Nokia Windows Phone!

Microsoft Lumia 535

It was inevitable, but it just feels too soon. Now that Microsoft has acquired Nokia’s mobile phone division, among other things, they’ve finally dropped the Nokia branding and have officially released their newest non-Nokia Lumia, the Microsoft Lumia 535! And to be honest, it doesn’t seem to be all that bad!

The Lumia 5xx series has always served as the entry point for aspiring Lumia and Windows Phone owners. This time though, the Microsoft Lumia 535 breaks its companies own barriers by coming with a 5 inch screen for a change. The qHD 540 x 960 resolution isn’t the best, but it fits today’s large screen trend. Will we still see a sub-5 inch Lumia handset? Probably not.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Other specs include a 1.2GHz quad core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage and 3G connectivity. And like all Lumias before it, the Microsoft Lumia 535 will come in several color options: green, cyan, orange, black and white. While there’s no news yet on local availability, this one’s targeted at emerging markets and pricing right now is estimated to be at $140 or about Php6,100+.

Microsoft Lumia 535 Specs

  • 5″ qHD display (540 x 960 resolution, 220 ppi)
  • 1.2GHz quad core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB internal storage
  • 5mp rear-facing camera
  • 5mp front camera
  • 3G connectivity
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS
  • Price: About $140 (Php6,100 after straight conversion)

Gionee Marathon M3: A Workhorse That Keeps on Going, and Going, and Going

Gionee Marathon M3

Say what you will about Gionee smartphones, but it can’t be denied that many of them have a distinguishing feature or two. With the Elife S5.5, it was its record-breaking thinness. With the Elife E7 Mini, it was its rotatable camera. Now, with the Gionee Marathon M3, it’s the massive 5,000mAh battery that will be enough to power your phone for 2 or 3 days or regular usage!

Of course, smartphones with massive batteries aren’t anything new. However, the Marathon M3 manages to cram such a huge battery without dramatically increasing the phone’s thickness. The Marathon M3’s back tapers toward the edges too, allowing for a much more comfortable grip.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Specs-wise, the Marathon M3 isn’t anything spectacular. The 5 inch HD display is decent and the 1.3GHz quad core processor from MediaTek along with the Mali 450 GPU should be able to handle most apps. No word on local pricing and availability yet, but we should expect it to hit Philippine shores soon.

Gionee Marathon M3 Specs

  • 5″ HD IPS display (720 x 1280 resolution, 294ppi)
  • 1.3GHz quad core MediaTek processor
  • Mali 450 GPU

  • 8GB internal storage, expandable via micro SD
  • 8mp rear-facing autofocus camera
  • 2mp front camera

SKK Mobile Raven Review: A Do-It-All Tablet for the Kids

$

0

It’s inevitable. Your child is going to get exposed to other kids who have tablets and they’re going to want one of their own too. Now, if I were a parent, I wouldn’t give them an iPad or a high end Galaxy Tablet right away. No, I’d rather start them out with something by something decidedly more affordable that can still do it all. And that’s exactly what the SKK Mobile Raven can do.

SKK Mobile Raven

The SKK Mobile Raven is your basic entry level tablet that won’t blow anyone away in terms of performance. However, it will be able to run just about any game your child would want to download from the Play Store. The price tag has been slashed from Php2,499 down to Php2,199 and is pretty attractive, but is it something worth picking up for the kids? Find out in my full SKK Mobile Raven review.

What’s in the Box?

The SKK Mobile Raven retail package is pretty bare of any accessories. You get the tablet itself, a micro USB transfer cable, wall charger, the quick start guide, warranty card, and that’s it! Of course, the battery is non-removable and most people would rather use a headset with their phones, not their tablets, so it’s not too bad.

Box Contents and Accessories

Build Quality and Design

The SKK Mobile Raven is an entry level tablet, so don’t expect any surprises when it comes to build quality. There are however a few interesting design features.

Front

The Raven is like most tablets with thicker bezels for easy handling of the device and to avoid accidental touches on the touchscreen. This is where the weirdness begins though. When holding the tablet in portrait mode, you’ll find the earpiece above the screen. However the front camera is actually situated at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Left Side

You won’t find any hardware controls on the left side of the device.

Right Side

The same is true of the right side of the Raven.

Top

The top is bare as well.

Bottom

All of the hardware controls and features seem to be located on just one side of the Raven. There’s a microphone pinhole that lets you use the tablet as an over-sized phone. There’s also the volume rocker, charging port, micro USB port, 3.5mm headset jack, and power/lock button. You can also see the SIM card and micro SD card slots from here.

Back

Switching to the back jolts you from portrait orientation to landscape. Near the top are the camera and its LED flash, and the loudspeaker. Then there’s the SKK Mobile branding in the middle. There’s also a secondary microphone pinhole for noise-cancelling to aid calls. If you notice, you can also see the micro SD and SIM slot toward the side.

DSC_0091

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Admittedly, the Galaxy S5-esque bandaid texture of the back does give the Raven some character. However, it’s still an entry-level tablet made with entry-level materials. At the very least, we should be happy that the plastic is pretty sturdy.

The Screen

A bad screen on a touchscreen device is one of my pet peeves, and on a tablet whose primary interface is through its touchscreen, the Raven couldn’t have done worse. The SKK Mobile Raven sports a 7 inch WVGA screen. As the viewing angles and color reproduction aren’t that good, it’s very likely that it is a TN LCD TFT screen, which is about as entry-level as it gets when it comes to LCD screens.

Screen Wide Angle Closeup

As bad as that is, it gets a little worse. The resolution is such that when the tablet is in portrait orientation, the image looks slightly stretched out from top to bottom, while in landscape, everything looks wider.

Screen Resolution

It’s not that apparent in this photo though, and to be honest, it’s not too bad. You can get used to it over time, but this is the main reason I don’t recommend this tablet for anyone other than kids.

The Chipset

Screenshot_2014-09-17-01-23-41

The device is powered by a relatively unspectacular 1.5GHz Allwinner ARM Cortex A7 dual core processor coupled with a Mali 400 GPU. The Raven did manage to surprise me though when I ran it through Antutu and a few benchmarks. The dual core processor manages to hit the 14k mark in Antutu, which is rather high and is the kind of result you would expect from a low end quad core processor, not a dual core chip. Here is the ranking of the Raven’s Antutu score and Vellamo Metal score as well.

Vellamo Multicore Antutu Ranking

Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that synthetic benchmarks aren’t the best way to gauge the overall user experience, but it’s certainly a start.

Entertainment and Gaming

Godzilla Screenshot

The SKK Mobile Raven is certainly portable and handy, however as an entertainment device, it’s very basic. The dual core chipset is capable of processing 720p HD videos, but just barely. And if you’re a discerning about image quality, the Raven’s screen is sorely lacking. Thankfully, audio playback is decent, even when wearing a headset. However, I’d sooner use a smartphone for music than a tablet.

Spotify

Also, it’s still fairly decent for casual games. I installed The Amazing Spiderman by Gameloft, which is a runner like Temple Run. There wasn’t that much of a delay between swipes and the frame rates didn’t stutter. Of course, this is WVGA resolution you’re looking it, so it will still look like the graphics from a 4 inch phone blown up to 7 inch proportions.

Amazing Spiderman Screenshot

So Should You Buy the SKK Mobile Raven?

First things first. For less than Php3k, you’re not going to get much in the way of specs of performance on a tablet, not just on the Raven, but any other Android device at that price point. It’s a really basic tablet that just so happens to pack a lot of features for a reasonably low price.

Camera Corner

Of course, this is still a fairly capable Android device. It can still run a lot of casual games and apps so its functionality is easily expanded. Then there’s the call and text capability, which is a surprising addition at this price point. If you’re not that picky, which most kids are, then the SKK Mobile Raven is for you.

SKK Mobile Raven Specs

  • 7″ WVGA TN Display (480 x 800 resolution, 133ppi)
  • 1.5GHz Allwinner ARM Cortex A7 dual core processor
