Cherry Mobile Flare S3 Box Front and Back

Cherry Angel has just posted on their Facebook account that the Cherry Mobile Flare S3 is now available at their store! While most of what he confirmed about the specs the last time around turned out to be correct, unfortunately does not have USB OTG support as previously mentioned. Still, it sports an even better camera than the Flare 3 while retaining its Php3,999 price point!

In case you missed it, the Flare S3 sports a 5 inch qHD IPS display, 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582 quad core processor, 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM. As mentioned before, that’s exactly the same as the Flare 3. However, it does sport an upgraded 13mp BSI autofocus camera with LED flash along with a 5mp front camera. There have been rumors that it might be just an interpolated camera, however it’s important to note that the chipset can support cameras with resolutions of up to 13mp.

Interested in picking one up? Head on over to Cherry Angel’s post for more details. You’re going to have to act fast though as stocks are limited!

SKK Mobile Phoenix X1: HD IPS Display and Octa Core CPU for Php5,499

Price

SKK Mobile has just dropped a bomb on their Facebook page, revealing what could be the most affordable octa-core phone yet! The SKK Mobile Phoenix X1 as it is named features a 5 inch HD display and octa-core CPU for just Php5,499! That’s even more affordable than the Cherry Mobile Pulse, which only recently held the title of the most affordable octa-core smartphone in the country!

Screen

The SKK Phoenix X1 sports a 5 inch HD IPS display with a pixel density of 294ppi. It’s not the best screen you can get from a local brand as there are octa-core phones with Full HD screens. However, I wouldn’t take this against SKK Mobile because that price is a killer.

Dimensions

The Phoenix X1 is fairly slim at 8.4mm. You get the standard micro USB port and 3.5mm headset jack. It’s worth noting that the phone supports USB OTG and CTIA-compliant headsets.

Cameras

Imaging responsibilities are covered by a 13mp rear-facing autofocus camera with LED flash and a 5mp front camera.

Cherry Mobile New Phone Teaser 3

Looks like Cherry Mobile has a new smartphone in store… Again. The local phone brand recently uploaded a teaser video on their Facebook page showcasing what is supposed to be a Faster and Stronger smartphone, at least, if the captions are to be believed.

Cherry Mobile New Phone Teaser 2

The mysterious glittery background of the video might suggest that it will be an addition to the Cosmos Series as some commenters pointed out. I’m inclined to agree, but this is just a teaser after all, so it’s best to wait until Cherry Mobile comes out with something official.

Well Oppo sure isn’t going to be happy about this. SKK Mobile just announced a new smartphone on their official Facebook page, and it looks suspiciously like another phone I know of. Here’s the pic they posted so you guys can be the judge.

SKK Mobile X4

Yep, that’s a clone of the Oppo N1 you guys are looking at, and while the specs may be watered down compared to the original, it should serve as a much more affordable alternative, especially if you’re interested in that 13mp rotatable camera.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Unfortunately, pricing and availability hasn’t been revealed yet. But the specs are fairly close to the Cherry Mobile Flare 3. Since SKK Mobile’s pricing competes well with Cherry Mobile, it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw the SKK Mobile X4 come in somewhere between Php5k or Php6k. What do you guys think?

SKK Mobile X4 Specs

  • 5″ qHD IPS display (540 x 960 resolution, 220ppi)
  • 1.3GHz quad core processor
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB ROM
  • 13mp rotatable autofocus camera with LED flash
  • 3.75G/HSPA+
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth

Gionee Pioneer P4 Gets KitKat Update in India, Philippines to Follow?

Gionee Pioneer P4 Homescreen

While Gionee is more known for their higher end offerings like the Elife E7 and the Elife S5.5, they also have a number of entry-level phones as well. The Gionee Pioneer P4 is one such entry level phone, one that I happened to have reviewed. If you happen to own the Pioneer P4, there’s reason for celebration as the phone has recently gotten an update to KitKat in India.

Of course, India is India and the Philippines is the Philippines. However, it shouldn’t take long for the international phone maker to make a KitKat update available to Philippine users as well. My estimate is about a month from now since that’s about how long it took for Philippine Elife S5.5 users to get their KitKat update after India got theirs.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos One Octa-core CPU

Holy wow! Looks like Cherry Mobile is celebrating their 5th year anniversary with a bang, having announced the limited edition Cherry Mobile Cosmos One on their Facebook page just now. The Cosmos One will feature a 5.5 inch HD IPS display protected by Gorilla Glass 2 along with a 1.4GHz MediaTek MT6592m octa-core processor. It will even come with a pleather back, similar to what we’ve seen on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and other recent Samsung devices.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos One Specs

Other key specs include 1GB RAM coupled with 8GB of internal storage. You’re also getting a 14mp BSI autofocus camera with LED flash along with an 8mp front-facing camera. The Cosmos One will be powered by a 2,400mAh battery and will run KitKat 4.4 out of the box.

Cherry Mobile Superion Probe Review: A Call and Text Tablet for Php4K?! Huwatda!

$

Cherry Mobile has consistently come out with value offering after value offering, and it doesn’t look like they’re showing any signs of stopping. Heck, if the recent slew of Superion tablets are an indicator of anything, it’s that we’re just going to keep getting better value for money with every tablet they come out with. One such tablet is the Cherry Mobile Superion Probe. What’s remarkable about the Superion Probe is that it covers all of the tablet basics while sticking to the Php4K mark.

Loudspeaker

Naturally, when the Superion Probe was announced, I was intrigued. Exactly how much are you getting for the money? Thankfully, Cherry Mobile was kind enough to lend me a review unit. Read on to find out if it’s worth the money in my full Cherry Mobile Superion Probe review.

What’s in the Box?

Accessories

The Cherry Mobile Superion Probe comes in a pretty decent-looking box. Packaging is obviously a huge part of marketing and it’s nice to see that Cherry Mobile consistently gets it right. As for the box contents, I found it to be pretty sparse:

  • tablet
  • micro USB transfer cable
  • 1.5A wall charger

As far as standard retail packages go, that’s about as bare as it gets. Of course, Apple gets away with it just fine with the iPad, so why shouldn’t Cherry Mobile?

Design and Construction

Cherry Mobile Superion Probe

Without even turning the tablet on, I was already pretty impressed by the Superion Probe. The front may be nothing to look at, but the back is quite a sight, featuring a brushed metallic back panel that made it look more expensive than it really was. Anyway, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Cherry Mobile Superion Probe Front

As I said, the front of the tablet is pretty nondescript. The screen dominates this side, naturally, but then there’s this tinny little earpiece right above it for making calls. If that’s your thing on a tablet, that is.

Left Side

On the left is the power/lock button and volume rocker, as well as a microphone pinhole toward the bottom for calls.

Mic Pinhole

The right side is bare of any hardware controls.

Right Side

On top, there’s a small pinhole to perform a hard reset. Since, the Superion Probe doesn’t have a removable battery, you’ll have to use this hidden reset button should the device freeze up and stop responding. There’s also a micro USB port and 3.5mm headset port, as well as a flap that hides access to the micro SD card slot and SIM slot.

Top

You won’t find any notable hardware features at the bottom.

Bottom

At the back though, there’s the 5mp autofocus camera at the top, Superion Probe branding in the middle, and Cherry Mobile branding and loudspeaker toward the bottom.

Back

The Screen

Screen Front

The Superion Probe features a 7 inch WSVGA screen. The panel is probably a low-end TN LCD because the colors are only barely accurate from head-on then wash out easily when you look at it from an off-angle toward the sides. To be honest, the viewing angles are really bad. You wouldn’t believe the screen is actually on in this next photo.

Screen Wide Angle

Another thing I noticed about the screen is that the tempered glass used to protect the touch panel doesn’t seem to be of very high quality. A good quality glass panel would be flat, but there seems to be a bit of random imperfections in the flat surface. You can easily notice this be turning the screen off and looking at it from the edges while holding it up against the light. You’ll see how the reflections on the surface tend to curve where there’s an imperfection.

The Chipset

The Superion Probe is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8225Q 1.2GHz quad core processor coupled with an Adreno 203 GPU. It’s about as entry-level as you can get even if it’s a quad core chip although it delivers plenty enough performance for the Superion Probe and it’s WSVGA screen. The relatively low resolution helps mask the shortcomings of the chipset because it doesn’t require as much rendering power from the GPU.

Quadrant 8,272 Vellamo Multicore 957 Vellamo Metal 589 Vellamo Browser 1,615

The result is relatively fluid and buttery navigation through the UI and decent overall performance when running games and other apps. Of course, some of you might still want some evidence in the form of benchmarks and I’m more than happy to oblige.

Software and UI

The Cherry Mobile Superion Probe runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box. The UI is specifically tablet-oriented so you won’t find a dock at the bottom of the screen. Instead, you’ll find a bare layout with access to the app drawer in the upper right corner of any homescreen.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Lockscreen

The stock UI is a vanilla implementation of Android. About the only change Cherry Mobile made was to the stock wallpapers. All you’ll find are Cherry Mobile-branded wallpapers. They didn’t even bother to include some alternative non-branded wallpapers like they did in the past with phones like the Cosmos X2 or Apollo.

Homescreen

There are also a few bloatware apps in the form of the Cherry Fun Club, eWarranty, KakaoTalk, Opera Mini Browser, Pinoy App Shop and TouchPal X keyboard. I understand the necessity of the eWarranty app, but I hate the redundancy of the Cherry Fun Club and Pinoy App Shop apps. I can already download apps from Google Play so why would I even bother with either one? I don’t mind KakaoTalk, Opera Mini and TouchPal X since some people actually do use those.

Telephony and Wireless Connectivity

Like any tablet from the Superion series, the Superion Probe is call and text capable, not to mention supports connectivity through mobile data. Messaging on the Superion Probe is a breeze because of the spacious onscreen keyboard and large area for viewing text. It’s also pretty easy to hold the tablet while typing because of its relatively small and slim profile.

Dialer

For those with big hands, you can realistically call on the Superion Probe as well. You’ll want to take note of where the microphone pinhole is though depending on whether you’re left or right-handed. Of course, you can always make use of a wired headset so you don’t look like a dork. Unfortunately, such a headset isn’t included.

Messaging

Now, if you want to preserve your battery and avoid using 3G when there’s a hotspot nearby, you can always just switch to WiFi. You can also use the tablet with Bluetooth accessories like keyboards and mice. Of course, it also has GPS built-in so the Superion Probe can double as your car’s navigation system. Now that’s what I call a do-it-all tablet!

Imaging

Camera

The Cherry Mobile Superion Probe is equipped with a 3mp rear-facing autofocus camera coupled with a VGA front camera. To be honest, neither one is that good although the 3mp primary shooter is capable of some decent shots in good lighting. Unfortunately, since it doesn’t have a flash, you’ll only be able to use it in good lighting anyway. The front camera likewise shouldn’t be used outside of good lighting, but since it will mostly be used for video calls more than anything else, it’s not too bad. Here are a few samples for you to check out.

Sample Outdoor Shot 100% Crop of Outdoor Shot Closeup of Subject, Soft Lighting HDR Low Lighting

Entertainment

Movies

7 inch tablets are great because they are extremely portable and make for excellent on-the-go multimedia centers. However, the Cherry Mobile Superion Probe falls flat because of its screen.  Our primary means of interaction and media consumption on a tablet is through its screen so the poor quality images that the Superion Probe is limited to has a huge impact on how you can enjoy things like browsing through images,  watching movies or surfing the Web.

Cherry Mobile Superion Probe Music

However, it is pretty slim and has a small footprint. The bezels aren’t as slim as on the SKK Marian Tab, but they’re still plenty slim, especially when compared to something like the Cherry Mobile Fusion Bolt. This contributes to its portability.
Thankfully, the Superion Probe comes with support for a micro SD card, so you can expand your media library and simply pop a card inside. There’s no USB OTG support though. I haz a sad :(

Gaming

Ah, this is probably everyone’s favorite section and one of the main reasons anyone would consider buying a tablet or not. What games can it play? I installed a couple of my favorite test games to find out.

The first game I installed was Dead Trigger 2, which is a popular first person shooter on the Play Store. I like it because it’s a small download and has a high graphics setting to quickly push your device to the test. The Superion Probe ran on high graphics settings without a hiccup, rendering effects like lens flares and smoke without slowing down noticeably. The controls were also very responsive, which is important in a game that requires great hand-held coordination.

Another game I like to test review devices with is Despicable Me: Minion Rush. It’s a notoriously bloated game that used to run fine on midrange devices until the developer decided to ramp up the graphics at the expense of wider device support. Unfortunately, the Superion Probe stutters here a bit. Responsiveness slows down so there’s a bit of a delay between a swipe and when the onscreen minion actually moves to where you want it to move. No biggie though. This is just a Php4k device after all.

Battery Life

The Superion Probe is equipped with a 3,000mAh, which is about right for a tablet of this size. It has decent battery life during regular usage and has pretty great standby time too. In a straight gaming scenario, it can last up to 406 minutes or 6.77 hours until the battery dies. Wow!

Cherry Mobile Superion Probe Gaming Battery Life Test

Where it really shines is with the Snapdragon Battery Guru app, which helps calibrate battery usage by limiting whether certain apps can run in the background or not. When you start up the Battery Guru app for the first time, there’s a learning period of a couple of days where it learns your app usage habits. Once the learning period is over, it starts limiting apps that you don’t use while those that you do use are left alone. Background apps are one of the main contributors to why smartphones and tablets drain power more quickly and the Battery Guru app remedies this by only letting apps that you actually use run in the background.

So Should You Buy the Cherry Mobile Superion Probe?

Cherry Mobile Superion Probe Brushed Metal Backing

As far as call and text tablets go, the Cherry Mobile Superion Probe has the bare minimum specs that I would consider acceptable. The WSVGA resolution is just right for the screen size and the overall performance is good enough that it won’t stutter across a range of games and apps. It’s also one of the best-looking local tablets I’ve seen yet and even beats out some devices that are twice its price.

Cherry Mobile Superion Probe Bad Screen

That screen is a huge downside for me though. Sure, it gives you call and text functionality as well, not to mention the ability to surf the internet on the go, but a user’s primary means of interacting with their screen and consuming content is through the screen.

Cherry Mobile Superion Probe Back and Branding

At Php3,999, it’s an incredible value too and gives you plenty of reason to ditch your smartphone and go with just a tablet as your main communication device. Of course, if you were to upgrade to the Superion Endeavor for just an additional Php1k, you would get a better quality HD IPS screen. Honestly, if you have the extra Php1k to burn, the Superion Endeavor is the better choice between the two.

SKK Mobile Phoenix G1: Flare 3 Killer for Php3,799

Phoenix G1

SKK Mobile has really been pushing the envelope lately in terms of specs, features and pricing. They’ve been getting so aggressive that even Cherry Mobile might have cause to worry as they were previously the only ones who would think about pricing their wares so low. The emerging budget brand’s newest offering, the SKK Mobile Phoenix G1, is no different, offering a 5 inch IPS screen, quad core CPU, and intelligent features for just Php3,799!

Phoenix G1 Dimensions

The 5 inch screen is an IPS panel with qHD resolution, similar to the Cherry Mobile Flare 3 and Flare S3. qHD is equal to 540 x 960 lines of resolution, which might not seem all that good on paper, but you’re still getting 220ppi in terms of clarity. The IPS panel will certainly also help, giving you great color reproduction and viewing angles.

Phoenix G1 Intelligent Features

The CPU is another bright selling point for the SKK Mobile Phoenix G1. Under the hood is a MediaTek MT6582 SoC with its quad core CPU clocked at 1.3GHz. Paired with a Mali 400 MP2 GPU, the chipset is capable of delivering performance equal to a Galaxy S3. On MT6582-based phones that I’ve reviewed before, I was typically able to score around 15-17k in Antutu.

Phoenix G1 Air Slide

Other Phoenix G1 specs include 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM. Surprisingly, the micro SD slot supports up to 64GB cards. You’re also getting HSPA+, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity. The Phoenix G1 is powered by a 2,000mAh battery and runs Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. No news yet when the SKK Mobile Phoenix G1 will actually become available, but this particular brand doesn’t usually take months before it releases a newly announced phone to the public (shots fired!).

Gionee Elife S5.5 Camera

I’ve been receiving a few emails and private messages from fans about where they can find Gionee service centers and stores nationwide. While I have yet to encounter a tech hub where I didn’t see a store with Gionee phones on showcase, service centers are a little harder to come by.

Thankfully, my contact from Gionee who’s usually responsible for releasing review units to me (thanks Josan!) emailed me the other day with a full list of both service centers and stores nationwide. I didn’t expect this long-ass list though. Oh well, I’ll just be posting it as is.

Gionee Elife S5.5 Review: After KitKat

$
0
0

As thin as the Gionee Elife S5.5 is, you would think that performance would have been compromised in some way. Yet it manages to pack an octa-core processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage beneath its gorgeous 5 inch Super AMOLED display. Even its shortcoming of having launched running an older version of Android has been addressed in a recent update.

Gionee Elife S5.5 with Box

I’ve been using the Gionee Elife S5.5 for close to 2 months now and I’ve learned enough about this feature-packed smartphone to confidently put out a review. So what makes the Elife S5.5 different from anything else that’s out there? Read on to find out.

Build Quality and Design

Gionee Elife S5.5 Back Angled

While the iPhone continues to set the standard in terms of smartphone design and aesthetics, the Gionee Elife S5.5 seeks to claim the title for itself. It isn’t just thin. It achieves such thinness using some of the most premium materials that can be found on a mass-market smartphone, sandwiching a metal frame between a layer of Gorilla Glass 3 on both the front and back.

Front Screen Off

On the front, you’ll find the gorgeous 5 inch Super AMOLED display with appreciably thin bezels on either side of the screen. Above it is the earpiece, front camera, and proximity and ambient lighting sensors. Below the screen are the capacitive navigation keys: Menu, Home and Back.

Left Side

Flipping the device over to look at its sides, you’ll see an aluminum strip that runs along the edge with the occasional notch every now and then to prevent it from causing network connectivity issues. Anyone familiar with the iPhone 4 Antenna-gate issue will understand why. Anyway, on the left side, you’ll find both the volume rocker and power/lock button.

Right Side

On the right is the micro SIM tray with a pinhole where you would insert an ejector tool to pop the tray out.

Top

On top is the micro USB port.

Bottom

At the bottom is the 3.5mm headset jack and a microphone pinhole for taking calls.

Gionee Elife S5.5 Back

On the back, you’ll find the 13mp autofocus camera with its LED flash. Between these two elements is another microphone pinhole, this time for noise-cancelling. Then there’s the Gionee branding in the middle and the loudspeaker toward the bottom. You’ll notice that the layout of the elements on the back are in such a way that the S5.5 looks like a point-and-shoot camera when held in landscape.

The Screen

The Elife S5.5 sports a 5 inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with a pixel density of 441ppi. To be honest, I have a bit of a bias toward Super AMOLED screens because quite frankly, the technology is gorgeous! Unlike IPS, Super AMOLED is capable of displaying true black because each individual pixel is able to turn itself on or off, resulting in theoretically infinite contrast.

Screen Wide Angle

The color gamut is also much wider, which typically results in punchy saturated colors. Detractors say it’s unnatural, but it’s something you can easily get used to over time. Besides, a punchy screen is more likely to have a wow factor versus one that has more natural color reproduction.

Gionee Elife S5.5 Screen Wide Angle Closeup

Also, based on this shot, it should be pretty obvious the Elife S5.5 has some great viewing angles.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

The Chipset

The Gionee Elife S5.5 is driven by a 1.7GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor coupled with a Mali 450 MP4 GPU. To help with multitasking, you’re also getting 2GB RAM to go with it. On paper, it’s a pretty decent combination and it translates pretty well into real life too.

While navigating through the Amigo OS UI isn’t as fluid as you would expect (more on that later), apps and games are executed pretty quickly. Switching between apps is a breeze too thanks to having ample RAM and a processor that can actually make good use of it.

I ran the Elife S5.5 through a couple of benchmarking apps: Antutu and Vellamo. I’m no longer going to be using Quadrant from this point forward for my own preferences. Anyway, here are the results.

The Software

The Gionee Elife S5.5 ran Android 4.2 Jelly Bean at launch with a layer of Amigo OS on top, and so did my review unit when I first got it. However, I’ve since updated mine to KitKat 4.4, which is now available via OTA by the way. My Elife S5.5 looks and performs slightly differently now, some of which is for the better.

Lockscreen Homescreen

Like many major international phone makers, Gionee likes to install its own proprietary UI skin, similar to Samsung’s Touchwiz and HTC’s Sense UI. In this case, it’s called Amigo OS, and it plays around with a few Android elements, unifying the homescreen and app drawer so there’s only one place to launch apps from, and eliminating widgets so they don’t clutter things up. It also changes things up in the Settings menu, creating a separate menu for commonly accessed features and putting them under Quick Settings. You can still access the traditional Settings menu, although now it’s called All Settings.

Notification Area Command Center

That’s all well and good except for one thing: navigating through it is slow. Even if you stick to the stock homescreen animation, swiping through the screens is still noticeably sluggish. Believe it or not, it was actually slower when the Elife S5.5 was still running Jelly Bean 4.2 so it’s actually slightly more responsive now. Still, it’s quite slow. Thankfully, it’s easily remedied by installing a 3rd party launcher like Apex or Nova.

Quick Settings All Settings

Telephony and Wireless Connectivity

As powerful as the Elife S5.5 is, it’s still a phone and should still function as any phone should. Of course, this isn’t a problem for most phones, although there’s often a usability issue here and there. For the most part, the Elife S5.5 passes this section of the review with flying colors.

Messaging

As a messaging device, the screen of the Elife S5.5 is very comfortable. It’s the result of a combination of things like the slimness and lightness of the device, the amount of screen real estate you’re getting, as well as the screen’s sensitivity. Making and taking calls isn’t as perfect as it could have been though. The handset fits nicely in the hand and I didn’t have issues with the other person on the line hearing me. Unfortunately, it was me who couldn’t hear them as well though because the earpiece wasn’t that strong.

Contacts

As far as wireless connectivity goes, you’re getting a full suite including HSPA+, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. Unfortunately, there’s no LTE, but that’s a limitation of the MT6592 SoC. One thing I’m very happy about is the Elife S5.5′s hotspot functionality. During typhoon Glenda, I cycled through all of the review units at home and used them as portable hotspots. Of all of them, it was the Elife S5.5 that never once had any issues connecting to 3G whereas a couple of local brands often had trouble maintaining a strong connection.

Imaging

Gionee Elife S5.5 Camera

The Elife S5.5 is equipped with a pretty decent 13mp rear-facing autofocus camera with LED flash. The phone actually comes pre-loaded with two camera apps, both of which offer their own unique functionality. The main camera app is your typical stock Android camera that’s been given a facelift. This is especially obvious in the camera settings view.

Stock Camera App Camera Settings

The other camera app and one that will likely appeal to all you selfietographers out there is the Charm Camera App. You won’t see any of the typical camera options here. Instead, you’ll get several self-explanatory modes like Live Filters, Stamps, Frames, Face Beauty and even a Makeup mode that lets you test several styles of makeup without actually using any!

Charm Camera App Charm Camera Live Filters

Of course, the camera isn’t just about gimmickry. Here are a few a samples shots that I’ve taken.

Moustache Stamp Indoor Food Shot Indoor HDR Food Shot Rear Camera Dressing Room Selfie Console of a Mini Cooper S Live Filter Random Outdoor Shot

Entertainment

When it comes to entertainment, the Elife S5.5 certainly doesn’t disappoint. Much of it is centered around the 5 inch Super AMOLED display, which makes just about everything look gorgeous on it. This is true whether you’re watching movies, playing games, browsing through your gallery or even just reading an eBook. You’ll also benefit from the MT6592′s built-in ClearMotion technology that smooths out frame rates when watching movies, making it an even more enjoyable viewing experience.

Gionee Elife S5.5 Spotify

Of course, you don’t necessarily have to use the screen to enjoy the Elife S5.5′s entertainment capabilities. It also functions as a music player after all. My only gripe is that the output when wearing a headset is just average.

So Should You Buy the Gionee Elife S5.5

The Gionee Elife S5.5 is a gorgeous marriage between reasonably high end specs and premium design and materials. Sure, at Php21,999, it might be way more expensive than local phones with similar specs and performance. However, it’s important to note that people who want to buy the Elife S5.5 aren’t buying it strictly for performance, but to make a statement as well.

I honestly find the Elife S5.5 to be quite refreshing. By now, I’ve grown used to looking toward the iPhone 4, 4S, 5 and 5S when I wanted to point folks toward a fashionable phone whereas I’d point to whatever high end Android flagship was out there if I had friends asking me about something more high performance. Now there’s the Gionee Elife S5.5 — a phone that compromises nothing.

Micromax Canvas Win W121 Selling for Less Than Php7K on Indian Retail Site

Micromax Canvas Win W121

Looks like affordable locally-branded Windows Phones might soon become a reality. Some of you might recall the Indian brand Micromax launching a couple of Windows Phones aimed at the budget segment. Well, one of them, the Micromax Canvas Win W121 has just gone on sale online at a price that will hardly burn a hole in your wallet.

Flipkart, the online retailer that is carrying the Canvas Win W121 is selling it for just Rs. 9494 or roughly Php6,800 after straight conversion. For that kind of money, you’re getting a 5 inch HD screen, 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 quad core processor, 1GB RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. You’re also getting an 8mp rear-facing autofocus camera, 2mp front camera, a 2,000mAh battery, and of course, Windows Phone OS 8.1 running out of the box. While Flipkart isn’t selling the Canvas Win W121 exclusively, it does offer one of the best prices on the phone.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Micromax doesn’t exactly have a presence in the country, but it does have the same OEM as MyPhone, one of our pioneer local brands. Seeing as the Indian market is an emerging market just like ours, it shouldn’t be a far off assumption to think we might see MyPhone or any of the other local brands to start offering Windows Phones here as well.

ASUS EeeBook X205 is a Super Affordable Netbook at Php8K

ASUS EeeBook X205

I thought netbooks had died an ugly death a few years back, but it looks like ASUS is keen on resurrecting this particular product category at the IFA with the newly announced EeeBook X205. The ASUS EeeBook X205 features a larger screen than the typical netbook at 11.6 inches, runs on an Intel Atom Z3735 quad core processor and delivers a Windows 8.1 experience out of the box for just $199 (roughly Php8.3K).

ASUS EeeBook X205 Color Variants

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

RAM and storage may be a tad limited at 2GB and an option between 32GB and 64GB respectively, but it’s still a better productivity solution than pairing your Android or iOS device with a Bluetooth keyboard, at least, in my opinion. You get a full-sized keyboard with chiclet-style keys, an appreciably large touchpad, and up to 12 hours of battery life. That you’re getting 500GB of cloud storage on top of that is just icing on the cake.

No news yet on when this might become available in the Philippines or how much retailers will be selling it for. However, based on how receptive our market was to netbooks, there’s a pretty good chance we might see this on our shores. If you plan on getting it, you’ll have a choice between black, white, gold and red color variants.

Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact Water

Try taking your iPad or Galaxy Tab with you to the shower. Go ahead. I dare you. Just kidding, please don’t. But if it’s the newly announced Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, then I might go and dare you again. Because not only does the 8 inch, 6.4mm thin tablet sport some monstrous specs, but it’s also waterproof!

Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact Front

The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is one sexy beast, featuring a Full HD display, and a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 quad core processor under the hood to go along with 3GB RAM and 16GB storage. You’re also getting a 4,500mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. Other specs include an 8.1mp autofocus camera on the back and a 2.2mp camera on the front.

Sure, there are other more powerful tablets out there such as the Nvidia Shield Tablet. There’s also the much-rumored Nexus 9. I can almost guarantee though that none of them will look as svelte and sexy as the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Now if only they could do something about that name…

Alcatel One Touch Hero 2 Could be a More Affordable Option to the Galaxy Note 4

One Touch Hero 2

There are phablets and then there’s this mother of a phablet called the Alcatel One Touch Hero 2. Not only is it a mouthful to call by name, but it also sports some pretty respectable specs considering this isn’t exactly a top-tier brand we’re talking about. It features a 6 inch Full HD IPS OGS display with Dragontrail scratch-resistant glass, 2GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor, and even a stylus for all of you creative-types!

The rest of the One Touch Hero 2′s specs are what you would expect from a reasonably mid-high end smartphone. You’re getting 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM, a capable Mali 450 GPU and Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. Surprisingly, there’s also LTE connectivity, which is likely thanks to a separate chip since the MT6592 doesn’t actually come with it. And of course, powering the entire assembly is an adequate 3,100mAh battery.

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

While 6 inch phablets really push the boundaries between phablet and tablet, the Alcatel One Touch Hero 2 may be the perfect size for those who enjoy stylus-based input but would prefer something smaller than the Galaxy Note 4. It would also be a more convenient alternative than carrying around any of the Galaxy Note tablets.

Huawei Ascend G7

Huawei has been making a name for themselves by creating some respectable phones with some interesting features. One of its newest offerings is interesting though because of its premium metallic unibody design that kind of resembles a gigantic iPhone from afar. The Huawei Ascend G7 is no mere lookalike though. It’s manufactured using the world’s leading Nano Molding Technology that results in a rich metallic texture that’s smooth to the touch.

The Ascend G7 sports a 5.5 inch HD display and is powered by a Qualcomm 1.2GHz quad core processor coupled with 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM. For the shutterbug in you, there’s a 13mp BSI camera on the back and a 5mp wide angle front camera for selfies and groufies. Surprisingly, you’re also getting LTE connectivity to go with it, along with a non-removable 3,000mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.

If you’re looking to pick the Huawei Ascend G7 up, it will be available internationally with an SRP of 299 euros or roughly Php16.7K after straight conversion. It will come in classic metallic color variants: moonlight silver, space gray, and horizon gold. It will hit Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Hungary, the Netherlands Turkey, Poland, Norway, South Africa and Mexico first in September, with other markets to follow shortly.

I was fortunate enough to have been invited to the local launch of the ASUS Transformer Book Flip and Transformer Book T100 Multi-color. While the launch didn’t go as smoothly as planned (the venue actually lost power for the entire thing, lol) we were still treated to some awesome new consumer tech.

Transformer Book T100 Multi Color

DSC_0298

Some of you may already be familiar with the original Transformer Book T100 that arrived on our shores almost a year ago. Well, the newly refreshed Transformer Book T100 Multi-color obviously gives you more variety in terms of color variants, but that doesn’t mean it’s the same old T100 you’ll be getting in the box. The new Transformer Book T100 Multi-color also happens to hide a more capable processor under the hood. And you’re still getting the same ability to take this Windows-powered tablet and transform it into a laptop by docking it into a keyboard dock. All for the same price of Php23,999!

Transformer Book Flip

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

While the Transformer Book T100 might interest more people just for its portability and dual functionality, the newly announced Transformer Book Flip allows for even more usage modes and comes in multiple configurations depending on what you need.

You have a choice between a 14 or 15 inch screen; Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, among other things. Not only that, but it also allows you use it in various modes, similar to the Lenovo Yoga series. The most affordable Core i3 variant with a 13.3 inch HD IPS display, 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD retails for a surprisingly easy on the budget Php26,995. Then there’s the Core i5 variant with the 13.3 inch HD IPS display, 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD for Php39,995. If you’re looking for more power under the hood, not to mention more screen real estate, there’s the Core i7 variant with a 15.6 inch HD IPS display, 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD, which will burn a Php49,995-sized hole in your pocket.

DSC_0260

The Core i3 and i7 variants are already available in ASUS concept stores and retail partners. However, you’ll have to wait a bit for the Core i5 variant, which will arrive mid-September.

Mi In-Ear Headset Review: The Best Deal on a Pair of In-Ear Headsets. Period.

$

The Mi-branded power banks may have attracted more attention at the last Redmi 1S sale over at Lazada, but honestly it was the Mi In-Ear Headset that had me interested. Thankfully, it didn’t sell quite as fast as the Redmi 1S or the Mi-branded power banks, so I was able to order one before stocks ran out on me. Here it is, freshly delivered and still covered in bubble wrap!

Freshly Delivered

Although I don’t often review a lot of audio gear, I’ve benefited from being able to own or try some really good in-ear headsets. I’ve owned a pair of more expensive Sennheisers and urBeats in the past, as well as a couple of affordable yet great-sounding A4Techs and Soundmagic headsets.

The Packaging

Box

Typically speaking, you get what you pay for. But I wasn’t expecting just how much you get for the Mi In-Ear Headset’s Php695 price tag, plus shipping.

Opened Box

The retail packaging alone is quite creative.

Case

And the case it comes in is understated yet gorgeous!

Case without Cover

The cable is kept away from view, yet you have quick access to inspect the connector, remote, and drivers.

Cable Management System

Let’s take another look at that nifty cable management system. Pretty neat!

Case and Organizer

Hidden underneath is a set of replacement buds. But what’s that metal thing propped up in the middle?

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Clip

Surprise, surprise! It’s actually a clip!

Clip Attached

Here’s what it looks like when it’s attached. You might not believe it, but it’s a really tight fit so you’re unlikely to lose it.

Sound Quality

The overall quality of the sound is quite balanced across the high tones and mids. Vocals shine through, even when listening to RnB where vocals tend to be drowned out by the bass.

Connector, Remote and Buds

However, the material of the buds was quite thin, resulting in comparatively weak bass. You can tweak the equalizer a bit to get better bass without any distortion though. A better mod is to replace the buds with something a little thicker. In the picture above and below, that’s actually the buds from my old Sennheisers. The material is thicker, hence it tends to hold the bass better.

Side Indicator

The Mi In-Ear Headset is impeccably designed, although I do have one gripe. The indicator for the left and right buds is so small and unreadable that it would be hard to tell in a few seconds which one is which. It doesn’t matter much if you’re listening to music, but if you’re playing games such as first person shooters, you might get confused when the sound comes from the wrong direction if you’re wearing them wrong..

So Should You Buy the Mi In-Ear Headset?

Mi In-Ear Headset Organizer

In my opinion, it should be the Mi In-Ear Headset that sold out quicker instead of the power banks. Sure, the 10,400mAh and 5,200mAh power banks were great values, but good sound is so hard to find at under Php1k. Yet here’s a headset that delivers awesomely clean sound for just Php695!

My only gripes are the thin material of the buds and the near-invisible indicators for the left and right buds. The first is easily remedied, but the second, not so much.

At Php695 though, I’m not going to complain about such small issues. Not when you get award-winning design and sound quality that you would usually only hear from headsets that cost 3 to 4 times as much as the Mi In-Ear Headset does. You’re definitely going to want to include these babies in your checkout cart on the September 12 Redmi 1s sale!

Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph Hands On!

For the last year or so, I’ve been lusting after the ASUS Transformer T100, especially now that they’ve refreshed it with a newer processor and a choice between different color variants. With the recent unveiling of the Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph though, I’m torn. The Morph is a super affordable Windows tablet at just Php11,999 and will be available this month! I ended up giving the Alpha Morph more hands on time to help decide if I should pick this one up instead.

Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph

The Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph certainly looks the part of a productivity machine. The 10.1 inch HD screen has great color reproduction and viewing angles, although won’t give you the best in terms of pixel density, but most people won’t notice that anyway. Oh, and that Windows button at the bottom of the screen? Yeah, that works.

Keyboard

You’ve obviously noticed from the first pic that the Cherry Mobile Morph comes with a keyboard. Wait, doesn’t that make it a laptop? Well, no. The keyboard is actually part of this really neat origami flip cover accessory.

Origami Flip Cover

Unlike most flip covers that double as a stand, this origami flip cover can prop up the tablet AND make it look good. On another note, look at those ports!

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

Keyboard Size Comparison

Now back to that keyboard, which connects to the Alpha Morph via Bluetooth. It’s a little on the smallish size. Irwin of SwirlingOverCoffee.com lent his hand for comparison. Based on his feedback, he says that his fingers tend to trip over each other while typing.

Typing

I myself have pretty large hands and I had trouble typing on the cramped keyboard. Of course, at Php11,999, it’s still pretty damn affordable. The keyboard accessory comes bundled with it anyway and I could always use the larger Bluetooth keyboard that I already have.

Kata M2 Review: The Manly Man’s Phablet

$

Battery Cover Removed

Some phablets are super svelte while others bank on sheer performance. The Kata M2 may not be the most powerful smartphone out there, but with its carbon fiber-like finish, this baby means business. Kata Digital was kind enough to lend me a review unit so here is my full Kata M2 review.

Build Quality and Design

Carbon Fiber Finish

The Kata M2 is a man’s phone. The massive 5.5 inch frame is encased in one of the most intimidating frames I’ve seen yet, and it’s covered in a texture that something similar to carbon fiber. It doesn’t even look like it needs a protective case!

Front

Naturally, the screen dominates the front of the M2 and the bezels are acceptably thin. Not too thin, but just right. Above the screen is the smallish earpiece along with the front camera and light/proximity sensors.

Capacitive Navigation Buttons

Below the screen are the capacitive navigation buttons: Menu, Home and Back. The microphone pinhole for making calls is also there, although you’ll have to squint really hard to see it.

Left Side

There aren’t any hardware controls on the left side of the M2, although there’s a metallic strip that runs down the side.

Right Side

It’s the right side where all the action is at. You’ll find a similar metallic strip, but there’s the power/lock button and volume rocker as well.

Top

On top is the micro USB port and 3.5mm headset jack.

Bottom

At the bottom is just a small notch on the corner for prying off the battery cover.

Back

At the back, you’ll find the glorious carbon fiber-like texture. In a sea of generic budget smartphones that are all beginning to look alike, the Kata M2 is a refreshing change. Of course, you’ll still find the usual elements: camera and LED flash toward the top, the koi logo in the middle, and the Kata branding and loudspeaker toward the bottom.

Kata Branding and Loudspeakers

The Kata M2 is one well-built phone. I do have one gripe about its build though. It’s massively heavy. In my opinion, the larger the phone, the lighter you should try and make it. The Kata M2 uses quite a bit of metal in its frame, resulting in one massively heavy mother of a phone.

The Screen

Screen

Whereas the original Kata M1 came with a Full HD IPS screen with OGS technology, the Kata M2 only comes with a 5.5 inch HD IPS OGS screen. It’s nowhere near as impressive to look at as the M1, but it does bring with it some other advantages.

For example, the M1 was painfully slow because of the added toll the increased resolution had on the GPU. The M2 has no such problem. And you’re still getting a reasonably good image with great color reproduction and viewing angles. Of course, it isn’t nearly as sharp as the M1, but most people won’t notice anyway.

The Chipset

The Kata M2 is powered by the same chipset as the Kata i3, which I also reviewed. The 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582 quad core processor is well-optimized for phones with HD screens, resulting in smooth overall performance whether you’re navigating through the UI, running apps or playing games. Here are some benchmark results from Antutu and Vellamo. It’s not the best way of measuring performance and user experience, but it will at least give you a good idea of how well it compares with other phones.

Antutu 18,431 Antutu Ranking Vellamo Multicore 1,178 Vellamo Browser 1,449

Telephony and Wireless Connectivity

The Kata M2 comes equipped with a full connectivity suite minus LTE. You get HSPA+ download speeds, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. It also supports dual SIMs, allowing you to connect to two cellular networks at once.

Of course, the Kata M2 still has to function as a phone, and the massive screen certainly goes a long way toward making things like messaging and calling an easier experience. The screen is large enough that you can even type in portrait mode comfortably. Also, the phone itself is large enough that the microphone pinhole is situated at just the right spot to capture your voice during calls.

Imaging

Rear Camera and Koi Logo

" ); (function() { var nn = document.createElement('script'); nn.type = 'text/javascript'; nn.src = 'http://synad2.nuffnang.com.ph/lr.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(nn, s.nextSibling); })();

The Kata M2 is equipped with a 13mp rear-facing camera with LED flash and a 5mp front camera. I took a couple of samples from the primary camera for you guys to take a look at.

Indoor with Flash

Here’s an indoor shot with flash. I’m pretty happy that it didn’t turn out harsh the way some shots with flash do.

HDR Sample

I can’t say it works well for product shots though. I shot this image using the same lightbox I use to take shots of review phones (like this one!) and it couldn’t handle the lighting very well. This is actually an HDR shot that combines light and dark exposures. I had to resort to this because shooting in normal mode ended up with shots that looked a little dull.

Entertainment

Screen Wide Angle Close Up

If there’s an area where the Kata M2 should shine, it’s definitely as an entertainment device. The large screen lends itself well to things like browsing the web, going through your gallery, or watching movies. Of course, the output is limited to HD, but that doesn’t mean you can’t play Full HD content.

Gaming

The Kata M2 is equipped with a fairly decent Mali 400 MP2 GPU. It’s hardly top shelf, but it gets the job done. I was able to a number of my favorite test games, but first I ran it through a couple of benchmarks.

3D Mark

Here’s a screenshot from one of the 3 test scenes from 3D Mark. It actually averaged around 15 to 20 frames depending on the scene.

Minion Rush

The first game I tested the M2 on was Minion Rush, a simple game with annoyingly heavy graphics. It’s a very pretty game that surprisingly puts a lot of GPUs to the test. Frame rates weren’t that good, however it was playable. What’s more important was responsiveness, and I’m happy to say there was hardly any delay between swipes and the actual character’s movement onscreen.

Dead Trigger 2 4

Another game I played was Dead Trigger 2, which is a favorite of mine because you can adjust the graphics settings between low, medium and high. On low graphics settings, controls were very smooth, but where’s the fun in low settings? On high settings, the responsiveness was still surprisingly smooth, all while rendering things like lens flares, particle effects and even rain drops that ran across the screen.

Real Racing 3 5

Finally, I played Real Racing 3, one of the most realistic racing games that can be found on the Play Store. Again, controls were very responsive. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem as if all the graphical tricks were being rendered, but frame rates ran smoothly except when the onscreen action would get busy with a lot of cars.

Battery Life

Battery 2

For a screen with its size, the Kata M2 comes with a rather disappointing 2,300mAh battery. I tested gaming battery life using GFX Benchmark where it ran the T-Rex test 30 times and estimated overall battery consumption based on how much power was consumed throughout the test. Based on the benchmark, the M2 will only last 117 minutes, or about a couple of hours in a straight gaming scenario.

GFX Benchmark

So Should You Buy the Kata M2?

Kata M2 with Box

The Kata M2 is one massive mother of a phone, capable of delivering midrange performance at a surprisingly entry-level price. And that’s despite the attractive screen size, which should have bumped its SRP higher than it is now.

I do have a few gripes however. The phone runs quite warm even under normal operation. When gaming, the heat can get quite uncomfortable. Also, it’s one heavy mother. Personally, I think the bigger you want to make your phone, the more effort you have to put into making sure to use lighter materials.

Of course, there’s a lot of things I do like as well. Despite the HD resolution, image quality is still darn good, and this is a 5.5 inch screen we’re talking about. Then there’s the 16GB of internal storage, which is expandable via micro SD. And if you’re not happy with that, Kata even throws in their own cloud storage!

Finally, I absolutely love the carbon fiber like finish. I remember I bought a carbon fiber sticker to protect the back of my old Cherry Mobile Flare (the original that started it all!) and the Kata M2 has the exact same feel, except this one can’t be peeled off! It’s a manly man’s carbon fiber-like finish that I just can’t get enough of. If only other phones would give you more than just a choice between glossy and matte. Oh well.

The Kata M2 is a great value. However, it’s got some tough competition. The Redmi 1S is a little cheaper and smaller but sports a faster processor. We’re also seeing some octa-core phones encroaching on the Kata M2′s price point. Still, if you’re looking for a large screen experience that doesn’t break the bank, it’s hard to go wrong with the Kata M2.
